The METAscripta project encourages expert users to help catalog Vatican manuscripts.
The Vatican Library (Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana) includes thousands of manuscripts that are hidden from discovery by scholars and researchers because they lack descriptive catalog records. Even many manuscripts that have been digitized and uploaded to Digivatlib, the website for the BAV's digital collections, can only be accessed by BAV Shelfmark. The METAscripta project seeks to make these manuscripts more accessible by encouraging our expert users to help catalog BAV manuscripts using a crowd-sourced cataloging system. This system depends on the use of authority files and controlled vocabularies to standardize data among various contributing catalogers. For further information on controlled vocabularies and authorities as well as definitions of descriptive terms, see below.
To contribute catalog records, please first register or login. Also know that the record(s) you create will be publicly viewed, so submitting a record means that you automatically give your consent to share that information with the international community of METAscripta users and scholars. Thank you for contributing your knowledge to help build better access to the 80,000 pre-modern manuscripts in the Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana.
